Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Coffee and Equipment

Brew a strong espresso or very strong black coffee using 1.5 oz of ground coffee beans per cup of water. You'll need 9 oz of cooled espresso for this recipe. Allow the coffee to cool to room temperature, then strain through a fine mesh strainer to remove large particles. This cooled espresso will replace most of the water in your lye solution, adding authentic coffee flavor and aroma to the finished soap.

Step 2: Safety First

Put on safety goggles and chemical-resistant gloves. Set up your workspace with all equipment organized and within reach. Ensure proper ventilation, as sodium hydroxide releases fumes. Keep vinegar nearby for accidental spills.

Step 3: Mix the Lye Solution with Coffee

Pour 9 oz of cooled espresso and 2 oz of distilled water into a heat-safe stainless steel pot. Slowly add 4.7 oz of sodium hydroxide while stirring constantly. The solution will heat up rapidly to 160-180°F as the lye dissolves. The coffee will deepen to an almost black color. Allow the mixture to cool to 100-110°F. This lye-coffee solution will add an authentic coffee note to your soap.

Step 4: Prepare All Oils

In a separate pot, combine:

  • 20.0 oz (567g) olive oil
  • 13.0 oz (369g) coconut oil
  • 12.0 oz (340g) palm oil
  • 9.0 oz (255g) palm kernel oil

Stir gently to incorporate oils evenly. Heat slowly to 100-110°F, stirring occasionally to ensure even heating.

Step 5: Combine Oils and Lye-Coffee Solution

Once both the lye-coffee solution and oils reach 100-110°F, slowly pour the lye solution into the oils while stirring steadily. Continue stirring for about one minute to ensure complete incorporation. The dark color of the lye will immediately begin coloring the soap.

Step 6: Blend to Light Trace

Using your stick blender, pulse for 30 seconds, then stir by hand for one minute. Continue this alternating pattern for 8-12 minutes until you reach light trace. The mixture should resemble thin pudding with visible trails.

Step 7: Prepare Ground Coffee

While the soap is blending, prepare your ground coffee. You'll need 1.5 oz of finely ground coffee. Use a coffee grinder to grind coffee beans to a very fine powder—finer than regular brewing grounds. This ensures gentle exfoliation rather than harsh scrubbing.

Step 8: Add Coffee Grounds at Trace

At light trace, add 1.5 oz of finely ground coffee to the soap batter. Stir vigorously by hand or use the stick blender on low speed for just a few pulses to incorporate the grounds evenly throughout the batter. Coffee grounds can accelerate trace, so work efficiently.

Step 9: Add Optional Colorant

If using brown or black oxide colorant for a deeper color, add 0.25 tsp now. Stir thoroughly to prevent streaking. You can also skip this step, as the coffee itself will color the soap dark brown.

Step 10: Pour Into Mold

Pour the soap batter into your prepared mold quickly, as coffee-containing batches accelerate to thick trace. Use a spatula to smooth the top as much as possible. The visible coffee grounds throughout the soap create an attractive, rustic appearance.

Step 11: Smooth the Surface

Use a spatula to create an even surface. Due to the accelerated trace from coffee grounds, you may have limited time, but do your best. The texture will still be beautiful and functional.

Step 12: Insulate for Gel Phase

Wrap the mold with blankets or towels to insulate and encourage gel phase. This helps ensure even curing and sets the color.

Step 13: Wait 24-48 Hours

Leave the soap undisturbed for 24-48 hours. The exothermic saponification reaction will occur naturally. Don't disturb the mold during this time.

Step 14: Unmold the Soap

After 24-48 hours, carefully remove the soap from the mold. The dark brown color will be fully developed. If the soap is still soft, wait another 6-12 hours before unmolding.

Step 15: Cut Into Bars

Using a soap cutter or sharp serrated knife, cut the loaf into 24 equal bars. You'll see the coffee grounds throughout each bar, creating a naturally beautiful appearance. Work carefully to avoid crumbling.

Step 16: Air Cure

Place bars on a well-ventilated rack with space between each one. Cure in a cool, dry location (60-75°F) for 4-6 weeks. The coffee aroma will mellow slightly during cure but remain present and invigorating.

Tips for Success

  • Use fresh ground coffee or high-quality instant espresso powder for better scent retention
  • Finely ground coffee is gentler on skin than coarse grounds; grind finely or use espresso powder
  • Coffee accelerates trace significantly—have all supplies ready before adding grounds
  • The coffee scent will be strongest right after unmolding and will lighten during curing
  • This soap is excellent for cellulite massage and improving circulation
  • Store in an airtight container to preserve the coffee aroma as long as possible
  • Use with a washcloth for maximum exfoliating benefits

Variations

  • Coffee vanilla: Add 0.3 oz vanilla fragrance oil for a sweetened coffee scent
  • Coffee chocolate: Combine coffee with chocolate fragrance for a mocha bar
  • Coffee coconut: Use coconut fragrance oil for a tropical coffee feel
  • Coffee mint: Add peppermint essential oil for an energizing wake-up bar
